Dr. Michael SafdiDr. Michael A. Safdi performed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he was elected to the premedical honor society. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School, where he was elected to AOA Medical Honor Society in his third year. Dr. Safdi completed both his Residency in Internal Medicine and his Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of California at San Diego and he spent ten months at Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation for further clinical training. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Gastroenterology and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).
Dr. Safdi currently serves as a Surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and has served two terms on the Board of Trustees of the ACG. He has also served the ACG as a five-term Governor for the Southern Ohio Region and as a Regional Counselor and was for five years the Gastroenterology Representative for the ACG and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy on the Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee for the State of Ohio. Since retiring from the Board he has assumed the ACG representative role on the SAGSA (dealing with socioeconomic affairs) with the American College of Physicians. Dr. Safdi also is now chairing the National Gastroenterology CAC meeting annually.
In addition, Dr. Safdi has served Jewish Hospital as its Director of Medical Education for Gastroenterology for the Residency program and has served on its Executive Committee. He has served for a number of years on Choice Care/Humana’s and Jewish Hospital’s Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee; he also served United Healthcare on its P&T Committee and as a Regional Gastroenterology Consultant. He serves on the Provider Assessment Committee for Humana currently. Dr. Safdi also serves as a consultant to a number of pharmaceutical companies including P&G, J&J (Centocor and Ethicon), and Solvay. He is on the speaker bureau of these and many more companies.
In 1996, Dr. Safdi received a Distinguished Leadership Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
Dr. Safdi has a special interest in clinical research with respect to peptic ulcer disease, GERD, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer , and colon polyps. He was one of the first private practitioners in the USA to do clinical pharmaceutical research in a totally private practice setting, and has published many articles on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and irritable bowel syndrome.
He lectures nationally on IBD therapy, reflux disease, ulcers and practice economics. A recent interest has involved being the first gastroenterologist we know of to learn to interpret virtual colonoscopy (CT colography).
